Across from the Institut Suedois on Rue Payenne is a little park that has remained a serene sanctuary to the few who frequent it. Square Georges Cain is dedicated to a writer and painter who was deeply inspired by the history of Paris and who devoted the last part of his life to the collections of the Musée Carnavalet behind which this garden is attached.

I come here to escape, to dream awhile of a more tranquil Paris, a more soothing Paris…balm for my creative yearnings, in a small square where ancient fragments from monuments that no longer exist lean against the weathered walls and a nubile bronze nude stands proudly in her well-tended flower bed…
